October is Domestic Violence month and an annual campaign is now underway to shine light on this on going problem all month.

The 4th Annual Purple Light Nights Awareness Campaign is now underway throughout northeast Ohio. Cuyahoga County law enforcement and leaders kicked off the 4th Annual Purple Light Nights Awareness Campaign with a ceremonial lighting.

The Domestic Violence and Child Advocacy Center started with a commencement breakfast at Massimo da Milano beginning at 8 a.m. yesterday morning.

The Purple Light Nights campaign aims to create dialogue surrounding domestic violence, provide information and resources, and engage the community to stop and prevent its future occurrence.

From now until October 31, community members are urged to shine a purple light bulb or strand of lights on porches or in windows in support of the campaign and Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

In support of the campaign, Tower City will serve as this year’s central hub. Throughout October, the mall will feature Purple Light Nights information and decorations. Terminal Tower will also support the campaign by remaining lit in purple from October 1 to October 7.

Domestic violence and abuse can happen to anyone, regardless of size, gender, or strength, yet the problem is often overlooked, excused, or denied. This is especially true when the abuse is psychological, rather than physical. Emotional abuse is often minimized yet it can leave deep and lasting scars.

Noticing and acknowledging the warning signs and symptoms of domestic violence and abuse is the first step to ending it. No one should live in fear of the person they love. If you recognize yourself or someone you know in the following warning signs and descriptions of abuse, don’t hesitate to reach out. There is help available.

Domestic abuse, also known as spousal abuse, occurs when one person in an intimate relationship or marriage tries to dominate and control the other person. Domestic abuse that includes physical violence is called domestic violence.

Domestic violence and abuse are used for one purpose and one purpose only: to gain and maintain total control over you. An abuser doesn’t “play fair.” Abusers use fear, guilt, shame, and intimidation to wear you down and keep you under his or her thumb. Your abuser may also threaten you, hurt you, or hurt those around you.

Domestic violence and abuse does not discriminate. It happens among heterosexual couples and in same-sex partnerships. It occurs within all age ranges, ethnic backgrounds, and economic levels. And while women are more commonly victimized, men are also abused, especially verbally and emotionally, although sometimes even physically as well. The bottom line is that abusive behavior is never acceptable, whether it’s coming from a man, a woman, a teenager, or an older adult.

You deserve to feel valued, respected, and safe.

Laura Cowan is an advocate and domestic violence survivor whose courage has served as a beacon for other survivors of domestic violence and friends of those who lost someone to domestic violence.

Cowan, who now is a volunteer at the Domestic Violence Center of Cleveland and shares her story as an example for others. For years, Cowan was in an abusive marriage where her husband abused her and her children.

This went on for several years and, during this time, she kept a letter with her chronicling the abuse to her and the others in their house. One day, her husband took her into town to retrieve a package at the post office. When he was distracted, she passed the letter to the postal clerk, who took the letter and slid it under the desk and then mailed it for her.

Two days later, the sheriff's department came and arrested her husband and freed her and her children and the other family members who had suffered abuse.

Later, Cowan testified at this man’s trial and her accounts of the abuse were essential in getting him sentenced to life in prison.

There are many success stories but you know there are many sad stories from Domestic Violence that has resulted in murder. So, for all of October, let’s dedicate our efforts to helping those in need to rise above their situation and improving their lives and the lives of future generations.

(10/10/11) - My guests talked about why they became involved in the fight against domestic violence and child abuse.

Laura Cowan told her story of surviving domestic violence, rape, physical and emotional abuse by her husband, who is now serving 6-life terms in prison.

Cowan talked about how she and her four children were beaten and locked in the garage for six months.

She was able to escape only when a registered letter came to the home and her husband had to take her to the post office to sign for it.

She was able to slip a note to the clerk who in turn called the police.

We also talked about how physical and sexual child abuse, bullying, teen dating abuse, intimate partner violence, stalking and elder abuse affect their victims.

Linda Dooley Johanek says when children see domestic violence against their mother they are victims too. She also said that child abuse victims tend to end-up abusing as teen or adults.

We informed viewers of WUAB 43 FORUM that The Domestic Violence and Child Advocacy Center has a couple of events coming up later this month.

The agency offers counseling and a shelter as well as a 24-hour HELPLINE

CLEVELAND - While her supporters chanted "let her go," Kathy Wray Coleman -- who organized a rally Wednesday for the victims of Imperial Avenue -- was led away in handcuffs.

The rally was held outside the Justice Center in downtown Cleveland while jury selection continued in the Anthony Sowell murder trial.

Bailiffs from Cleveland Municipal Court arrested Coleman for an outstanding warrant during the rally.

The rally started with Coleman demanding police keep their promise to always look into reports of violence against women thoroughly. Some relatives of the Imperial Avenue victims complained their missing person reports were ignored.

City Council members Kevin Conwell and Maime Mitchell stood side-by-side with Coleman during the rally Wednesday. Turns out, in May 2009 Coleman was found guilty by a jury of resisting arrest.

Coleman asked to delay sentencing, then never showed up for sentencing last month.

So Wednesday, during the rally on the steps of the Justice Center, bailiffs showed up with a warrant and arrested her for failure to appear for sentencing.

"Well I was shocked that Kathy was arrested, it was like something out of a movie. Here we are at a protest to end violence against women," said Cleveland City Council Member Maime Mitchell.

Those who attended the rally even argued with each other about Coleman’s arrest. Some said Coleman should have never held a protest on the steps of the Justice Center with an outstanding warrant. Others said the city was just trying to shut down her protest because she has repeatedly criticized city officials and police.

A spokesperson for Cleveland Municipal Court said Coleman will remain in jail until Monday before seeing a judge, because there’s no bond for people who skip court.

I married a child molester and didn't even know it. I trusted him, I believed him and I loved him so much that I would of walked to hell and back for him. My life that I worked so hard to get was shattered and so has my daughter's childhood. I can't explain the pain, the guilt, the anger I have inside me. But I am a fighter and I WILL SURVIVE this and so will my daughter and my other two children. I feel everything happens for a reason and me marrying this monster was God's way of stopping him. He had many victims and ruined many lives and relationships, but he will not win, my heart is broken,but not my spirit. I now know that my life has a meaning, a purpose. I want tougher laws and more help for victums and their families. My husband got 40 years for what he has done,but others get away and become repeat offenders. I am on a crusade to fight for all the innocent children out there.

My daughter suffered through this for 5 long years and my niece suffered for over a year, but others have suffered longer. When will this ever stop? How can we change the laws? My husband was arrested for child molestation in 2002, he didn't get arraignment for 5 years. He sat a free man, continuing to molest innocent children in the mean time. I was so stupid, so naive, I knew he was arrested for it, but after hearing his side of the story(the mother of the child accusing him, his girlfriend at the time, and father of the child,were in a bitter custody feud and my husband and his mother told me that he was being used as a pon to win custody and I, like a fool, believed him and his mother). I truly in my heart thought he was being falsely accused, plus after he was arrested nothing ever came about it for 5 years, we didn't hear anything, I later found out that the case was supposedly dropped. I blame myself, for trusting him, for believing in him and most of all, for loving him, but I never knew the truth. I never seen anything, he hid it so well from me. He acted like the loving husband and caring father that I always wanted and longed for. He had me under his spell and I feel like such a dam fool, an idiot. I feel horrible that my child has suffered through this and was too scared to tell me, she also didn't want to hurt her baby sister, she didn't know any better, plus he told her if she told anyone, the both of them would get in a lot of trouble, she didn't know any better. All she wanted was a fathers love and lived in a nightmare to get it. My faith has been tested, but not broken. I feel in love with him and I hate to say it, but he changed my life around. My life was in shambles after my dad died back in 1998. I began drinking and using drugs. I dropped out of high school and by the age of 21, I was a single mom of two and homeless, living in a motel. After I met the monster, we got married, had a baby together and I went back to school and got my GED, took a few college classes and accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. I am not the poster child for salvation, far, far from it, but I did my best to live a good, Christian life and I thought I found my soul-mate. My children called this monster daddy, they loved him as much as I did. I was so distraught, so devastated, so hurt, so confused, but I knew God would walk me through this, just like He has in the past. I believe God brought me to Georgia, so he, my husband, would finally be caught. He's been doing this for 20 years, it took my daughter and my niece to go through hell to finally stop him. To make matter worse the newspapers and news station reported the wrong facts and they made it look like he got away with what he done to my child, like the charges were dismissed. He plead guilty to 2 out of 6 charges. one for my niece and one for my daughter, but in the news stories, it makes it look like it was only for my niece and it mentioned his 25-year-old niece, even though she couldn't file charges against him because her statue of limitations were up(That needs to be changed).What could I do? Nothing, but sit back and feel victimized all over again and look like lairs.There were people who didn't believe he did all he did, including his own mother and they believed him over us and the news stories made them believe them even more. All I know is that life has gone on, we have moved on. I made my group Mother Against Child Molesters to help me cope and get support and advice and it's done so much more then that for me. I have helped many women, chidren and even men with my group and I am so very proud and humbled for that chance to make a difference. Now all I want to do is to continue making a difference.

I hope to one day start support groups for my cause, where we can come together in one place and be face to face and talk, hug, cry, a human touch is much better then a computer's monitor. Now you may have a better understanding of my mission and why I am a strong advocate for women and children and what I have plan for the future and why I am asking for your support, encouragement and most of all, your understanding. There was once a time when I felt so alone and broken that I never imagined I would be able to feel any different. Coming from an abusive childhood and then in an abusive marriage, I knew in my spirit it was no good but I just didn't know what to do. I felt as though I was not going to survive.

What makes the difference today? I am continuing to heal from my abusive past and that it is possible to do. But, I work with other victims in the hopes they do not have to live the same nightmare I lived at one time. It is awesome to know that I am not alone and I control my decisions for me today!

Torture Trial In California

The more dubious and uncertain an instrument violence has become in international relations, the more it has gained in reputation and appeal in domestic affairs, specifically in the matter of revolution

FRENCH VALLEY ---- The daughter of an Aguanga man on trial for torture told jurors Monday that her father would make her eat her own vomit and feces while also periodically hanging her upside down for hours as a form of punishment.

Mansa Musa Muhummed, 55, shook his head back and forth several times Monday while listening to the testimony of daughter Sharon Boddie, now 27, at Southwest Justice Center.

Muhummed is charged with seven counts of torture, 12 counts of child abuse, four counts of spousal abuse and two counts of false imprisonment. He faces seven life sentences should he be convicted as charged.

Born Richard Boddie, he later began using his Muslim name of Muhummed. He was arrested by Riverside County sheriff's deputies in April 1999 at a property on Sweepstakes Lane in Aguanga after one of his three wives ---- two of whom prosecutors say were locked in a partitioned garage ---- was able to sneak a letter to a post office clerk.

Between the three "wives," Muhummed has more than a dozen children.

As several siblings have also testified to earlier in the trial, Sharon Boddie described Monday how she was often forced to use a bucket as a toilet as well as how her father withheld food for days and would beat them all severely.

She told the jury about a time she sneaked into the bathroom and her father grabbed her so violently by the hair that a fist full of hair was pulled from her head, leaving a bald spot she still has.

Deputy District Attorney Julie Baldwin asked Sharon Boddie if she ever saw her father with any weapons in the home.

She said her father would wave a handgun ---- sometimes inches from her face ---- and say, "I can kill all of ya and nobody would ever know."

Sharon Boddie also testified to seeing her father with a machete.

"Once, he tried to chop my arm off," she said. As Boddie answered, Muhummed could be seen and heard snickering slightly.

Sharon Boddie then described how one sister held her head down, another held one arm and her father the other arm as he threatened to cut it off with the machete.

Baldwin asked her why he did it.

"Because my stomach hurt and I wouldn't eat my food," she said.

The prosecutor later asked Boddie why she didn't tell deputies about what was happening in the home when her father was arrested more than nine years ago.

"I didn't think my daddy was really going to jail," she answered. When the prosecutor asked her why that was, she responded, "Because he always got away with it."

About a year after her father's April 1999 arrest, Sharon Boddie gave authorities details of what was going on. Baldwin asked why it took her so long.

"I finally realized he was really going to be in jail and I was finally going to have a life," Boddie said.

Boddie told jurors she could not read or write at the age of 18 when her father was arrested.

Since then, Boddie said, she has received help from others and joined the Job Corps, where she gained new skills.

"Are you working today?" Baldwin asked.

For possibly the first time after several hours on the witness stand, Boddie smiled broadly. "Yes, I am," she said, adding that she got her first job at age 23.

Her father's defense attorney, Peter Morreale, attacked portions of Boddie's testimony, including her statements about being forced to eat her vomit and feces.

Morreale asked if she ever told authorities about that since her father's arrest.

Boddie said she couldn't remember.

The defense attorney then went after Boddie's testimony about being hung upside down by her father in the basements of three different homes. Morreale told the woman that at least one home in Desert Hot Springs doesn't have a basement.

Boddie then describes there being cars and says she was hung "from the wood in the garage, basement, whatever it is."

Son Tells of Beatings
Boddie said he was 5 or 6 when his father began the practice of withholding food from him and his siblings after they moved from Virginia to Bakersfield.
Muhummed beat and withheld food as punishment when his children did not wake up on time, did not say Muslim prayers on time, or failed to do their chores, Boddie said.
"I probably got beat three or four times a day," Boddie testified.
His father would have the children extend their arms and make a fist, then he hit them on the knuckles with a boat oar, Boddie said.
"He would hit us as many times as he could and if we made him miss we get hit like three more times," Boddie testified.
Sometimes Muhummed would have the children lie on their stomach, put their feet in the air and he would hit the soles of their feet with the oar, Boddie testified.
Riverside County Sheriff's Department began its investigation of Muhummed days after one of his wives, Laura Cowan, passed a 13-page letter to a postal clerk chronicling the alleged abuse and the family's living conditions, according to witness testimony, also, cowan had tapes to back up her story. The letter was sent to the Department of Public Social Services, then passed on to law enforcement.
Muhummed is a Muslim and told one of his wives that his faith permits having more than one wife, according to court testimony.
The trial resumes Monday at the Southwest Justice Center in French Valley.

Morreale showed Boddie a report written by a sheriff's investigator who notes that Boddie told him she was hung upside down for as long as five days.

Boddie said she didn't remember saying days, but being hung for hours while not being allowed to eat for days.

Muhummed's trial is scheduled to continue Tuesday morning before Judge Paul Dickerson. Jurors have been told they will likely begin deliberating the case in early June.

When I was going threw my trial, I learned from the courts that battered women are entitled to submit a victim impact statement to advise the pre-sentence investigator and the court of the ramifications of the crime(s) for which the offender was convicted on the battered woman and her family. While investigators are usually receptive to hearing about the emotional, physical and financial losses sustained by victims, they are too often resistant to hearing of the dangers that the perpetrator continues to pose to the battered women and children and reluctant to suggest that these risks of violent recidivism should be considered aggravating circumstances supporting longer sentences or factors to be addressed in crafting protective conditions on probation. Thus, sentencing recommendations typically do not fully inform the court of information relevant to sentencing deliberations in many jurisdictions.
